Garden Pron – First week of May edition
More under the cut.
It rained a lot this week (and it had rained a lot last week too), so not a huge amount got done other than mowing and some clean up. But my, doesn’t the rain make for some fabulous pictures?
And a few experimental shots that I rather liked.
Things are shaping up in the veggie gardens too.
The peas loved all the rain, they’re doubled in size. Enough so that I’m going to start squash this weekend then this plot will be set.
The carrots have their first true set of leaves. Aren’t they cute? These are my son’s gardening project, and he’s pretty excited about them.
My peppers and tomatoes are planted. I surrounded them with shredded newspaper and over the next few weeks will be covering the whole garden area with it. It’s a great mulch because the paper “melts” and forms to the soil (you shred it or tear it up and soak in in a tub of water for a few minutes before spreading it, or you can shred it, spread it and water the area real well, but the shred and soak gives you a lot more control and less bare spots) and it breaks down by the next spring. Most papers these days are made from vegetable based inks and are very biodegradable.
Little tomatoes
Baby bell pepper
And this year’s upside down planter experiment has started. This year I’m doing cherry tomatoes and banana peppers (which aren’t big enough to be put in the other planter yet) since last year all the fruits were tiny. I’m curious to see if small fruiting plants work better. If they do I plan to try strawberries next year.
