Amazon is spinning furiously as it tries to defuse this PR disaster. http://www.towleroad.com/2009/04/amazon-deems-gay-books-adult-strips-sales-rankings.html Towleroad is following the story closely and makes some interesting points about gay (and lesbian) books being "dirtier" than straight "dirty" books and wondering how the "glitch" that Amazon says caused the problem was so targeted. He also brings up the general problem of books (or periodicals) with any gay content of any kind such as community newsmagazines, are routinely treated like porn regardless of their content. After watching the state government of Tennessee try to pass a law making it illegal to discuss "homo-sex-ality" in the public schools and the success of anti-Prop 8 propaganda that used the meme of "teaching children gay marriage is OK" as a scare tactic that motivated voters to pull the lever for bigotry, it makes me very concerned.

It's not just books with erotic content. GLBT books that are not really at all explicit are having their sales rankings removed as well. For example: http://www.amazon.com/Advocate-College-Guide-LGBT-Students/dp/155583857X/
